We are pleased to share that since taking up the challenge to teach chess to very young children whose ages range from 3.5 years to 4.5, we are observing a new trend of 4 years old picking up chess.
It is amazing that children at such tender age is able to learn the basics of chess. We will agree that at such a age it is probably not ready for them to learn or to pick up chess tactics and strategies.
We could however teach them the names of the various chess pieces, the setting up of the pieces on the board and the movement of pieces, including simple captures of pieces. These children exhibit strong memory skills and it is so commendable for them to be able to pick up basic chess knowledge. For Charlotte who is barely four years old, she could identify captures whilst for 4 year old Amy she appreciates that she is not allowed to ‘yum-yum’ (capture) the King.
For the moment they could sit diligently for 30 to 45 minutes and thereafter they will start to switch mode to being playful toddlers again. The most impressive traits are that they are articulate, composed and able to learn and appreciate chess, a complicated game to even some grown ups. An interesting observation is that the four students who have started at 3.5 to 4.0 years of age, are girls. We are still awaiting for our first boy student.
